Ane possible pattern is that the odd-numbered terms  are vii, 8, 9, 10, 11, ... and the even numbered terms are 7*iii, vii*iii^2, 7*iii^iii,...

Given this pattern the adjacent term is 189

However, vii*three^2=63 , not 72. A possibility for the even-numbered terms is 3*seven, (3^2)*8, (3^3)*9=243,...

I guess the answer is 729.

Series is seven 21 viii 72 9

showing seven*3= 21

8*3^2=viii*9=72

Following this series next number could be 9*ix^2=nine*81=729

some other pattern could exist

7*3=21

eight*3^2=72

9*3^3=243
